Plant Collection

The vascular plant collection of the United Herbaria Z+ZT are kept at the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich. The Herbarium houses an estimated 2.5 million of dried specimens that cover all groups of vascular plants, but the genera AlchemillaPotentillaRosa and Rubus are particularly well represented. Specimens stem from around the globe, but we hold significant collections from Switzerland (e.g. from E. Landolt and E. Sulger-Büel), Europe (e.g. from R. Keller and U. A. de Salis-Marschlins), New Caledonia (e.g. from M. G. Baumann-Bodenheim) and southern Africa (e.g. from H. Hess and H. Schinz). Of great historical value are the collections of J. Gessner (1709-1790), J. Hegetschweiler (1789-1839) and J. J. Scheuchzer (1672-1733). Overall, the Herbarium holds some 18,000 types that have all been digitised. Further information can be found on our external page website.

Specimens are sent out on loan to scientific institutions and researchers can visit the Herbarium by appointment with the curator. Guided tours through the collections are regularly offered for the general audience.
