Timber identification

Populations of many tropical timber species are threatened as a consequence of massive illegal logging. This market is highly profitable and difficult to control. One important difficulty is the identification of potentially illegally logged timber through customs officials. We develop molecular and analytical methods to identify tropical timber species using DNA analysis. Our current project focuses on rosewoods in the genus Dalbergia, with a special emphasis on Dalbergia species endemic to Madagascar.
